About FreeGameDirectory

Browser games, no signup, no download.

What we do

To be the curated alternative to mega-portals — a thin discovery layer that points players at high-quality single-purpose browser games, organized by category.

We focus on free browser games. Every page on freegamedirectory.com is built from the _factory/games-registry.json single source of truth for the games network, plus curated third-party recommendations, cited and linkable so readers can trace any number back to its source.

Who this is for

FreeGameDirectory is built for anyone who plays Wordle, Connections, 2048, Worldle, or any other free browser game and wants a curated list of solid options.

Why this exists

Public data on free browser games is technically free, but practically locked behind file formats, acronyms, and paywalled dashboards. FreeGameDirectoryexists to close that gap: take the raw federal and public-sector data, and turn it into pages a normal person can read in thirty seconds.

How we work

  • Primary source only. We pull from the _factory/games-registry.json single source of truth for the games network, plus curated third-party recommendations and cite the exact dataset and version on every page.
  • No invented numbers. If a figure is not in the underlying public data, it does not appear on freegamedirectory.com. We never generate synthetic statistics to fill gaps.
  • Methodology, in plain English. FreeGameDirectory is editorial. Every listed game is one we have personally played and would recommend, organized by category (word, number, geography, score-attack). We bias toward focused single-game sites over mega-portals — the directory exists to make those sites discoverable, not to replace them.
  • Refreshed on a schedule. The directory updates whenever a game launches, retires, or shifts category. Editorial picks are reviewed quarterly.
  • Corrections welcome. Readers flag issues all the time. When the source fixes a record, FreeGameDirectory follows.

Known limitations

FreeGameDirectory is editorial-only — no per-user data, no accounts, no game stats. The linked games each store their own player data in your browser's local storage. We use Google Analytics for aggregate traffic measurement only.

Why not a mega-portal?

Sites like poki.com and miniplay.com host thousands of games on one domain. They optimize for catalog size and serve a different need — discovery via category browsing of huge inventories. We optimize for game quality and the focused single-purpose experience. A daily-puzzle game like LexSweep lives better on lexsweep.com than as lexsweep buried inside freegamedirectory.com/word/lexsweep. The directory exists to make those focused sites discoverable, not to replace them.

About the games network

FreeGameDirectory is part of a small network of independent browser games. The four primary games we host are LexSweep (5×5 word-square daily), NumGrid (5-digit number daily), MapDash (geography-trivia daily), and HexMerge (hex-grid 2048-variant endless). All four are built by the same team and link to each other via the games-network registry.

Independence

FreeGameDirectory is an independent publication. We are not funded, owned, or directed by any of the agencies, companies, or organizations that appear in our data. Hosting is paid for by advertising — see our Privacy Policy for details — and we do not take paid placements, sponsored rankings, or "remove-my-entry" fees.

History

FreeGameDirectory launched in 2026 as part of a small portfolio of independent public-data sites. It has been maintained and updated continuously since.
